Washington, DC – Congressmen Connie Mack (FL-14) and Eliot Engel (NY-17), Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, issued the following statement today in advance of Sunday’s presidential election in Venezuela:

“The eyes of the world will be on Venezuela this Sunday when it holds its national elections.  As Article 1 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter guarantees, “The people of the Americas have a right to democracy and their governments have an obligation to promote and defend it.”

Rep. Elliot Engel
Democrat NY
"The Venezuelan people deserve no less and the democracies of the Western Hemisphere must stand staunchly behind this principle.  We call upon the Administration to hold Venezuela to the high standard for democracy enshrined in the Charter to ensure that Sunday’s election accurately reflects the will of the people of Venezuela.”
